What is Trim?
Trim means pruned leaves of a rape cannabis flower. Cannabis trim is low in cannabinoids. In most cases, trims will be thrown away. But when you understand what you can do with these abandoned leaves, you may think twice about throwing them away.
Trims: Sugar Leaf and Fan Leaf
Trim actually refers to two types of leaves: Sugar Leaf and Fan Leaf. Sugar leaves are tiny leaves that grow from buds, while fan leaves are larger leaves beneath the buds.
If you want to turn a cut into helpful something, fan leaves are virtually worthless. Fan leaves have very low percentages of cannabinoids. If you want to make edibles, you might want to focus on smaller sugar leaves. They have more trichomes, and therefore, they are suitable for making edibles.
Can I Decarb Fresh Cannabis Product?
The answer is yes. Fresh trims can be decarbed when in the proper condition. It's an excellent way to preserve more terpene while it's fresh. For better control of time and temperature, you will need to dry out the trim before decarbing. Moisture in the trims will not matter the chemical reaction. Still, the water will evaporate and prolong the time you use for decarboxylation. A longer decarb time will cause some level of THC degradation. So please dry the trims for a day before decarbing. With less moisture, decarbing fresh trims will take the same amount of time, just like you decarb cured cannabis flowers. From my personal experience, fresh decarbed trim will taste a bit more like kale. That's the chlorophyll taste from trim leaves. If you dry them longer, the kale taste will be gone.
Add Trims to Food and Drink
Tools:
ECRU #DecarbKit or #Activator
Up to 2 oz of dried trim
Preparation:
Step 1: Calibrate Your Oven
Set your desired mode using 4 preset modes. If you are making CBN, CBG potency herb.
Preheat your oven with the sensor probe before decarb. Make sure you DO NOT place the LCD display in the oven.
Check your oven temperature. If the temperature reading on the thermometer differs from your oven setting, raise or lower your oven temperature to compensate. For example, your setting is 260°F, but the thermometer reads 250°F, which means your oven is lower than your preset temperature. For decarb, you would increase your oven temperature.
NOTE: It's common for your oven to fluctuate by + 30°F and – 30°F. That's because oven cycles turn on and off for a total range of 60°F.
Step 2: Decarb Your Herb
After preheating, spread herb evenly in the glass pane, and press the silicone lid top down on all sides to seal.
Insert the temperature probe into the socket on the right side of the device.
Bake on the center oven rack for even heating. Do NOT exceed recommended durations.
When you put your decarb box with herbs in the oven, your glass pan will take some time to reach the desired temperature. The preset timer will start the countdown once the preset temperature has reached. Once the process is done, the alarm will sound.
Storage:
Fresh butter made from trims has a short shelf life and is usually not found in dispensaries. Therefore, it is advisable to eat fresh. If you store the butter in the refrigerator, it takes up to 1 week. If you store the butter in the freezer, it can be stored for up to 6 weeks. With proper storage, you can enjoy the perfect homemade and delicious cannabutter. Once you get used to the recipe and gain experience, you can play around with different ingredients by adding other herbs and making it compound butter.
Dosing Tip
Typically cannabis trim contains 3% or more cannabinoids. If you use a high THC strain, the percentage of THC can be up to 5%. Please carefully dose your edibles before ingestion. You might refer to the below chart for regular trim dosing.
3% THCA x 10 = 30mg of THCA per gram of cannabis trims
The conversion rate of THCA to THC is 0.75
30mg THCA x 0.75 = 20.25mg of THC per gram of trims
Conclusion:
Decarb fresh trim is a good option to turn useless trim into delicious edibles. Simply infuse trims into cannabutter or your oil of choice. It won’t be as strong as cannabutter made from buds, but it will save you a whole lot of money!
